Core-excited states of <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:msub><mml:mi>SF</mml:mi><mml:mn>6</mml:mn></mml:msub></mml:math> probed with soft-x-ray femtosecond transient absorption of vibrational wave packets

A vibrational wavepacket in SF$_6$, created by impulsive stimulated Raman scattering with a few-cycle infrared pulse, is mapped onto five sulfur core-excited states using table-top soft X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy between 170-200 eV. The amplitudes of the energy shifts femtosecond oscillations depend strongly on nature state. prepared controlled pump laser intensity to probe levels for various extensions S-F stretching motion. This allows determination relative core-level potential gradients, good agreement TDDFT calculations. experiment demonstrates new means characterizing surfaces.
